(NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL) The last time we saw the ASRS Super Late Model Series we were at Richmond International Raceway. This week the series rolled into New Smyrna for 125 laps under the lights. Justin Blackdeer left Richmond with a 33 point lead over second place Jim Foose. For Jake Douglas the night would get off to a good start when he nabbed the pole.
Points leader Justin Blackdeer would earn himself yet another front row start when he scored the outside pole. Travis Wright started 3rd, Ty Hester 4th and Scott Smith rounded out the top 5. Although starting second, Blackdeer would not have the kind of night he has been accustomed to. After leading a 22 lap portion of the race, a pit stop for tires and fuel would put Blackdeer deep in the field. On the ensuing restart, Tom Giannini was turned in front of the field by the 111 of Cole Eastman.
The result of the spin would be a massive pileup that damaged the 51 of Blackdeer, he would not return to the race until the closing laps. Besides Blackdeer, the only other lap leader in the event was Jake Douglas. Douglas put on a clinic finishing off his dominating performance with a win. The win would be Douglas’ first in the series. Jacob Cochran followed him to the finish line followed by Tim Knott in 3rd, Allan Young in 4th and Ty Hester in 5th. The points landscape would receive a shakeup with Blackdeer’s struggles.
His lead shrunk to 26 over Foose with Foose having late race troubles of his own. Jared Mogard maintained his third position, Allan Young remained in 4th and a new face entered the top 5 in Tim Knott. Jonathan Holstein fell from 5th to 9th due to a two race suspension for contact at Richmond. 52 points separates 5th place Tim Knott and the leader Justin Blackdeer. The series will roll into Indiana next week for a race at Lucas Oil Raceway.
