(DAYTONA BEACH, FL) The 2017 American Sim Racing Series kicked off its 2017 campaign at the high banks of the Daytona International Speedway. The series opener seen fifty one drivers show up in hopes of grabbing a spot in the 36 Truck starting field. After qualifying was done it seen Josh Walker in the #60 grab the pole position and to his outside was Jonathon Holstein in the #70. They would bring the field to the first green flag of the season.
The 125 mile race would go green till lap 19 just shy of when drivers would have had to make green flag pit stops. The race would go back green on lap 22 which if the race had gone green would set up an exciting finish as the drivers would be short on fuel.
The hopes of running the remaining 28 laps green would come to an end on lap 31 as Danny Rogers was sent spinning after contact with Michael Atkins, Jr.. The race went back green on lap 36 setting up a 14 lap run to the end. The last 14 laps were exciting as the field raced two by two as the checkers came closer and closer. The race would see its final yellow on lap 44 for a wreck in the back of the field.
This would set up a Green-White-Checkered finish to the end. The field went back green on lap 49 with the yellow not coming out. However a crash off turn four coming to the checkered flag triggered the big one.
The race seen 9 different leaders but when the checkers flew it was Zac Bozanich cruising to his 7th career ASRS victory with his teammate Josh Walker finishing 2nd . Defending series champion Jim Foose finished 3rd, Danny Rodgers was 4th, and rounding out the top 5 was Jonathan Holstein.
Much like the Xfinity Series the top 8 drivers in the standings will lock into the Truck Series Chase and these drivers kicked off their 2017 Truck series chase hopes off well.
Next week the Trucks head to the Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Sam Maxwell Customs 100 next Tuesday even. As always be sure to tune into Off Camber TV as they are the official broadcast team of the 2017 ASRS Truck Series ALL season long. Look them up on Facebook and give their page a “like”.
