ASR Open Wheel: It’s IndyCar With a Twist

Published On: September 2nd, 2022
The ASR Open Wheel Series features the INDYCAR Dallara IR-18 and many aspects of the two are the same but ASR likes to do things a little differently. From the tracks to the regulations ASR offers a unique experience for drivers.

The tracks on the schedule feature some of the best Open Wheel Series venues of yesterday and today and even a little creative liberties such as February’s event at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course and two events held at NASCAR’s Chicago Street Course. Former INDYCAR tracks such as Nashville Superspeedway, Michigan, Chicagoland, Auto Club Speedway, Phoenix have all hosted races. The Fall Season kicks off Kansas Speedway, which has undergone a reconfiguration about 10 years ago just following INDYCAR’s departure from the track. Joining Kansas during the Fall Season are New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Charlotte, Pocono, Twin Ring Motegi Road Course, and former ChampCar venue Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada. Return visits to Auto Club Speedway, Indianapoils Motor Speedway Road Course and Nashville Superspeedway along with a season finale which remains “To Be Announced”.

The series rules differ slightly from the INDYCAR Series with one attempt at green-white-checkered finishes offered at each event. Along with the opportunity for races to go over their scheduled distance ASR awards Free Passes to the first vehicle off the lead lap at each caution along with “wave-arounds” for any vehicles remaining on the race track ahead of the leaders. The Fall Season will bring the mandatory tire compound switch during races that has become a staple of INDYCAR road course events, where drivers will be required to manage their race strategy and ensure they use both the Firestone Primary Black tires and Alternate Red tires atleast once in each event.

ASR puts a focus on teams competing for the Series Team Championship while maintaining fairness for smaller teams by only scoring each team’s highest finisher at each event. Beginning with the Fall 2022 season several new teams and drivers are joining the ranks of the ASR Open Wheel Series to not only compete for a driver’s championship but also the team championship.

The Fall 2011 Season kicks off Wednesday, September 14th at Kansas Speedway.
