(CONCORD, NC) The second edition of Wicked Cushion December Dirt Week Presented by TJBDesignsMO.com featured three nights of racing that culminated in the 100 lap Wicked Cushion 100.
Pennsylvania’s Robby Schaeffer kicked off the week on the right foot by setting the Driven Designz Fast Time on Tuesday night in the #131.
The headliner on opening night was the Coffman Racing Graphics 50 for the Modifieds. Cazz Bedford was fastest in qualifying and led for 44 laps before damage to his #9 cost him the lead and dropped Bedford to a 15th finish. Bedford’s main competition was the #156 of Brad Dyer, who led two laps.
Josh Walker snuck in at the end and rallied from the fourth starting position to bring the #58 to the point, a position he held for just 4 laps but Walker led the most important lap as he took the #58 to Victory Lane in the opening race of Wicked Cushion December Dirt Week Presented by TJBDesignsMO.com. Brad Cross was second followed by Kris Titus third, Frank Gonzales, and Jared Mogard rounded out the top five
Night #2 kicked off with the 410 Winged Sprint Cars competing in the “Dirty 30”. DJ Kilanowski showed his #13 was the class of the field leading all 30 laps from the pole.
While Kilanowski dominated the winged portion of Wicked Cushion December Dirt Week Presented by TJBDesignsMO.com, the racing throughout the field was close with drivers inside the top 10 exchanging positions nearly every lap.
Following the “Dirty 30”, the JK Designs Sim Slider Duels took to the track to determine the starting grid for the Thursday finale.
Frank Gonzales (#04) picked up the win in JK Designs Sim Slider Duel #1, while Kilanowski (#13) won JK Designs Sim Slider Duel #2. Eight drivers earned starting positions from each JK Designs Sim Slider Duel and the top six finishers in each were placed into the “redraw”.
Kilanowski drew the pole and was joined by Brad Cross on the front row for the start of the Wicked Cushion 100. With 28 available positions on the grid and 28 drivers in attendance, Wicked Cushion December Dirt Week Presented by TJBDesignsMO.com Officials dropped the Last Chance Qualifier Race from the schedule.
Notable starters in the 100 lap finale were defending December Dirt Week Champion Jared Mogard in the #00, the Social Media Darling Joey Lamm in the #81, 2017 Twitchy Race Reports Triple Crown Champion Brad Cross in the #30, former ASRS Sam Maxwell Customs Truck Series Champions Jim Foose (#42) and Jason Stewart (#1) and American E-Sports Association Outlaw Racing Series Champion Cazz Bedford in the #9.
The green flag flew on the 100 lap Wicked Cushion December Dirt Week Presented by TJBDesignsMO.com finale at sunset and with the changing skies and lights coming up to full brightness the scenery was topped only by the on-track action.
Early on Brad Cross set himself apart from the field as the #30 looked to be the class of the field but hard charging drivers such as Richard Spahr in the #71 made their presence known as they battled into contention.
Cross had to fend off many challenges from DJ Kilanowski (#13) and as the race progressed Kilanowski came to life and while Cross led a race high 84 laps, it was Kilanowski leading when the caution flew setting up the one lap dash to the checkered flag and over $360 in prizes to win Wicked Cushion December Dirt Week Presented by TJBDesignsMO.com.
When the green and white flags were waved for the dash to the finish, Kilanowski and Cross made contact as they crossed the start-finish line and again as they exited turn two side by side. That’s when things went sideways for Kilanowski and Cross, the two raced into turn 3 Cross made a move to get under the #13 of Kilanowski and in the process made contact turning Kilanowski around in front of the field causing a huge crash.
With the field crashing in turn 4, Cazz Bedord avoided the carnage by ducking to the low side and drove his #9 off turn 4 to see the checkered flag and a $310 cash payout plus a JK Designs Sim Slider PC Stand. Jared Mogard went around the outside to bring his #00 home in second, a $124 payout. Josh Walker rallied from starting 26th to finish third and a $93 payout. Jason Stewart took home $62 for finishing fourth while Frank Gonzales pocketed $31 for his fifth place finish. Finishers 6th to 10th were awarded $10 from Twitchy Race Reports.
