(Madison, IL) Tuesday night racing for the ASRS Sam Maxwell Customs Truck Series returned to the St. Louis market as drivers and teams prepared to race in the Driven Designz 125. At 1.25 miles, the egg-shaped oval would require 100 laps of racing to complete.

Main event qualifying for the 34 entered teams was scheduled to take place prior to racing, with Devin Serra (20) laying down the fastest lap of the session. At 33.643s, Serra would score his 2nd perch’n Pole Aware of the 2018 SMCTS Season, 5th overall. Brian Yaczik (55) registered 33.674s to start alongside in his 2nd front row start of the year.

Pole-sitter Serra would get things started quickly, taking off to the lead over 2nd-place Yaczik by Turn 1. Yaczik immediately found company in the Chevrolet Silverado of Jared Mogard (00), as Mogard would take the position from Yaczik by way of the inside line, moving him up into the 2nd-position. Through some early caution periods, the Top-3 drivers held position before electing to see the crews on pit road for the first time on Lap 13.

Cycling back to P1, Serra continued his lead until Lap 23, when Mogard gained the top spot by staying on the track as the rest of the leaders elected to pit under caution again. Mogard made a strong case on the next restart, utilizing tires slightly more used than the rest of the field to hold off the charge of Serra. Yaczik remained close, pressuring Serra for 2nd and allowing Mogard to put some distance himself and the rest of the field.

With Mogard having led a third of the event, Sam Maxwell (98) would pick-up 1st-place by winning the race off of pit road, electing to change 2 tires. Maxwell cleared Mogard on the following restart, holding the lead into Turn 1, but would be unable to defend as Mogard had caught and passed Maxwell on the entry to Turn 3 to retake the position.

15 laps to go; Brian Yaczik prefaced the next lead change, taking over from Mogard on pit. Yaczik would get a good jump on the next restart to get out ahead of Mogard, but a quick yellow flag would cancel the progress made. His second attempt faired similar, but over the course of a few laps had worked up to striking position. With 5 to go, Yaczik would get a little loose, allowing Mogard to take advantage and drive past, Devin Serra in tow.

With only a handful of laps remaining, Serra began to reel Mogard in, gaining a tenth of a second nearly every lap. Having caught Mogard at the white flag, the race came down to the final corners, as Serra would opt to dive deep into the corner, washing up the track and into Mogard. The contact send Mogard around and into the wall, as Serra would continue on to collect the checkered flag and race victory.

Final race results showed Devin Serra finishing in 1st after starting from the pole position and leading 21 laps in the event. Brian Yaczik, with 11 laps lead, finished 2nd, while Ronnie Osmer (53) rounded out the podium after starting 6th. Notably, Jared Mogard, after leading a race-high 62 laps, would cross the line in 16th. Sam Maxwell, Marc Cohn (1), Jason Stewart (7), and Anddy Veltman (97) picked up a respective bonus point for leading at least one lap in the race.

Points after Gateway show Brian Yaczik moving up into the 1st position, 7 points ahead of 2nd-place Jared Mogard. Jason Stewart is up one spot into 3rd, with Devin Serra and Nick Kerling (45) rounding out the Top-5. Jeremy Banning (15) makes some noise as the biggest gain in points for the week, up 12 to the 45th position.

Next week, ASRS Sam Maxwell Customs Truck Series action will continue in the Chicago metropolitan market. The Driven Designz 125 is set-up for 84 laps of racing at the 1.5-mile Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, IL and will bring the series one race closer to the upcoming Chase for The Cup.
