(BROOKLYN, MI) Heading into Tuesday’s race at Michigan, nobody had heard of Tom Giannini but after the 100 mile race, everybody at ASRS knows who he is and knows he is a threat to win.
Sam Maxwell was fastest in qualifying and was joined up front by Marcus Napier for the green flag. The field took the green and immediately the race was on as drivers battled for track position early. Trouble struck on lap two and it had championship implications as Dylan Hickey spun collecting both Jason Lindner and Jim Foose. Lindner continued on but Foose was sent flipping into the fence.
On the restart, the heat was on as Jared Mogard, Zac Bozanich and Robby Baskins battled for the lead with Mogard and Bozanich both taking turns swapping the lead while battling side by side as green flag pit stops shook up the running order.
The caution flew just as the cycle of green flag pit stops was wrapping up, leaving some drivers on the track that hadn’t pitted. Those drivers were running short on fuel and Alex Bates and Jason Lindner ran out of fuel before they could pit. Tom Giannini’s #33 emerged as the leader.
Giannini was able to get away from the field on the restart, and never looked back. The #33 faced challenges from the #46 of Robby Baskins and the #10 of Jared Mogard but was able to hold on as the final caution flew with four laps to go.
Tom Giannini took his first ASRS win, with Mogard in 2nd, Jamie Vaughn third, Jake Douglas and Marcus Napier rounded out the top five.
Robby Baskins extended his points lead as Foose crashed early and finished 28th, both drivers had clinched Chase positions prior to Michigan along with Justin Vaughn. Jason Linder, Zack Calloway, Jared Mogard and Shawn Musick all have locked themselves into the Championship battle.
