(TALLADEGA, AL) Things get wild and crazy when ASRS goes to Talladega, this year’s Xfinity race was no different. Joe Johnson and Big Evil Racing teammate Chad Mikosz led the field to the green flag in their Chevy Camaros.
Johnson led lap one, before championship leader Jim Foose navigated his #42 to the front for one lap. Foose gave way to Mikosz who led lap three and then Gene Collum took the lead on lap four. Those first four laps featured four lead changes among those four drivers, showing just how competitive the field was. It was that closeness that led to the first caution flag on lap five as Jonathan Hambrick made contact with Travis Wright, sending Hambrick’s #26 spinning and collecting Robby Baskins and Jim Foose.
Two more cautions flew during the 125 mile race, first Mikosz spun in the tri-oval. The third and final caution flew when Toby Wedgewood and Jamie Vaughn.
Teammates made their way to the front with the Baskins-Vaughn pair of Justin Vaughn and Pete Baskins joining the BER teammates of Collum and Mikosz and two unlikely partners with Steve Buhala’s #43 leading Shawn Musick’s #12. The battle was on between those six drivers.
At the checkered flag it was Justin Vaughn taking the win, his first ASRS win. Pete Baskins took second in his ASRS debut, Buhala brought his #43 home third with Musick and Travis Wright rounding out the top five.
With his win, Justin Vaughn took the points lead from Jim Foose, who finished outside the top ten for the second week in a row. Vaughn holds a 3 point lead over Foose as the Xfinity Series takes a break before returning to action May 24th at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
