Twitchy Race Reports

(FONTANA, CA) After a three week break the ASRS Truck Series returned to the track continuing its “NASCAR goes West” swing hitting the Auto Club Speedway for the Harley-Davidson 150 for 63 laps in California. The Truck Series would also enter Cali with a new title sponsor as the Truck Series will now be known as the ASRS Sam Maxwell Customs Truck Series. Tonight forty-eight drivers made an attempt to grab one of the thirty-six starting spots. After qualifying was done it seen Sam Maxwell grab the pole with Devin Serra starting to his outside. The rest of the top five were as followed Danny Rodgers 3rd, Hunter Poston 4th, and Jonathan Holstein 5th. Quick race stats only seen two caution periods for seven laps as it was a relatively clean race which provided some great green runs. There were six different leaders with Devin Serra leading the most pacing the field for thirty laps.

The race started off good going the first fourteen laps green before the first yellow flew. Everyone would come down pit road for fuel and tires. The race restart on lap eighteen and would continue that way until lap thirty. The short run seen some great racing up front and throughout the whole field for that matter. The second and final yellow would happen on lap thirty-two when the #89 of John Kennedy clipped the apron in turns one and two getting a bit loose leaving the #48 of Mitch Brown with nowhere to go but into the back of the #89 sending him spinning. It was just a solo spin which left Kennedy with minimal damage and he would be able to continue. Everyone would come down for fuel and tires yet again.

With the second and final caution period done the race restart on lap thirty-seven. This set up a twenty-five lap shootout to the end. Everyone was under the assumption that they would be good on fuel. With that in the minds of everyone the race was on. The top five drivers put on a great show for the fans who tuned in as they traded spots back and forth. The #91 of Zac Bozanich looked to be one of thee if not the fastest drivers in the top five but as the end came closer he would get into the wall out of turn two and would end up with damage. This would hurt Zac’s speed and cost him a chance at the win at the end of the night. As the final run went on fuel mileage became a big factor. With multiple drivers being short on fuel with under ten laps to go green flag pit stops began to take place. Jared Mogard and his #01 along with last race winner Danny Rodgers decided to stretch it out. This set up a very exciting finish. Mogard would make it all the way to the white flag and half way down the back stretch before running out. The same was the story for Rogers and his ride who was the leader. Mogard would try to coast to the finish but would come up short of the win. The lucky one was Jason Stewart in his #1 ride who would take the lead and the win.

The top five finishers were Jason Stewart grabbing his 2nd career ASRS victory and his first of the 2017 Truck Series. We caught up with Stewart after the race and he has this to say “I’d like to thank JF2 Motorsports and Visit Florida tonight. Thought Jared had it in the bag but he ran out of fuel coming through 3 and 4. Definitely was luck and we led only one lap but the one that counted. Truck ran out about 300ft away from the line and we had enough to coast to the win.” We also caught up with Jared Mogard and his #01 ride and he had this to say about the finish “We had a good truck and it raced really well. I honestly thought we were good to go on fuel when we went back green on that last restart but we didn’t. I was 0.2 short on fuel and figured I could maybe get lucky and get it. Either way at the end of the day it was a great day and good finish. I want to thank my sponsors and teammates. On to tomorrow’s action in the Super Late Model.”
